OL Our ethos is very much aligned with your method of producing “intricately crafted events with thoughtful and unique design”. Embracing what makes each of us unique is what (we believe) gives celebrations meaning. Could you share how you achieve such a high level of creativity, time and time again?

SL “Absolutely! I love using my clients as inspiration for the design and then collaborating with them throughout the process as we curate even further.” The journey begins with “a questionnaire where they can tell me what is important to them, anecdotes about their relationship, and how they want their wedding day to feel”. This is used to “create their design deck, which serves as the baseline. We then layer details that are meaningful to the couple to make the day authentic” and unique “to them. Maybe their favorite artist or filmmaker influences our color palette, or we select a late-night snack of mini hot dogs since those are the bride's favorite guilty pleasure. If elements don't align with the couple's taste and the story we are telling, I believe less is more - and often more powerful”.

OL It must be a challenge to translate a client’s vision into a fully-fledged event plan.

SL “This is really the fun part. It’s so rewarding to turn a client's often chaotic vision into a cohesive and beautiful design. It starts with listening to how they want the day to feel, and what is important to them. It takes some tact to be able to translate a feeling into tangible pieces while being” considerate of budget constraints. “We provide multiple options at different price points and work closely to select what feels right for them.”

OL It’s exciting every time we hear that one of our readers has eloped. Elopements are often an opportunity to be quite creative in location or style. What are the benefits of having a wedding planner involved?

SL “I love elopements and their intimacy. Some of my favorite weddings have been with less than 15 guests. However, fewer guests doesn't” remove the need for “logistics, good design, and style. We help eloping couples pick the perfect photographer, hair and makeup artists, florist, and attire”. With those details and the remaining planning taken care of, they can “have a truly stress-free day”.

OL On that note, you’re trusted with executing one of a couple’s most meaningful life celebrations. What does that responsibility mean to you?

SL “I know that Spreading Lovely will live somewhere in the memory of each of our couple's wedding celebrations, and I don't take that lightly.” Their ability to be “truly present in every moment” is a result of the “thought and attention to detail that our team puts into their day”. On the day, “it takes experience and the right attitude to remain calm and” problem solve when an aspect is “going off course”. During the planning phase “we have found it is often people, rather than wedding tasks, that stress our clients the most. That one bridesmaid who isn't happy with the dress choice, or your mother wants you to wear a veil when you” don't want to. “I let my clients air their concerns as often as possible, then offer solutions on how to delicately handle family members or friends who may be the cause of that stress.”

OL You recently celebrated your own wedding, congratulations!

SL “Thank you so much! Planning our wedding was an absolute dream. We knew that we wanted to create a weekend full of activities” allowing plenty of time to celebrate with “our guests and express our gratitude for their well wishes. We easily decided” on Yosemite National Park, a location that “I grew up visiting with my family. We centred our day around three words that we use to describe our relationship: emotion, adventure, and uniqueness”. If an element “didn't help express our words, we cut it”.

OL That’s a brilliant foundation for a wedding design. When you’re running someone else’s big day, what’s happening behind the scenes?

SL “We do as much prep-work beforehand as possible to make the day seamless. We spend the morning reviewing last minute details, checking in with the couple, drinking lots of water, and eating a big meal. Once we arrive onsite it is go, go, go.” Everything is unpacked and “organized by location: ceremony, cocktail, dinner, dancing. Our team” sets up while “I visit with the clients to make sure they're calm and feeling good”. Around 2pm most clients have “a ‘first look’, so we make sure that all nearby areas” are completed. “Around 3pm all large details are in place with just the little touches remaining. During the ceremony” our team sets up a private “bridal room with a plate of appetizers and two drinks for the couple to” have a moment alone “after the ceremony. Throughout the rest of the day we're working to take care of all the details like making sure the marriage license is signed, helping grandma to her seat, ensuring the guests giving toasts know when and where they're speaking, and putting out little fires (figuratively) along the way to ensure our clients are enjoying themselves to the fullest. Wedding days truly whirl by, but I will always leave with such a full heart”.

OL While every wedding that your team designs and plans is unique, do any stand out for you personally?

SL “We recently planned a pro bono wedding in one week. We were contacted on Sunday and held the wedding that Saturday. Due to the bride's health circumstances the couple decided to turn their engagement party into a wedding. We whipped together the design and vendors within a few days, with many items and services donated. It was incredible to see the outpouring of love and support from the wedding community to this couple. We are so grateful to have been the planner that this couple reached out to.”

OL What a special occasion to have been a part of. Do you have any advice for our readers who are currently planning a wedding or event?

SL “My number one piece of advice would be to go with your gut and don't look back. Also, hire a planner and designer to make your wedding much less stressful so you can focus on you and your partner, and building a foundation for the rest of your lives together!”

OL That’s brilliant, thank you. To finish, we’d love to hear about your affiliation with the Girls Not Brides organisation.

SL “Absolutely, thanks for asking. When I was dreaming up Spreading Lovely I knew I wanted to incorporate giving back. Sadly, each year, 12 million girls around the world are married before they are 18. Girls Not Brides focuses on long term solutions to empower girls, educate communities and families, provide health services and schools for girls, and help to establish and implement laws and policies. I donate a percentage annually to this amazing organization and I know my couple's value that they play a role in giving back.”
