Avoid being distracted at your own event with these simple but effective ideas for catering a party at home.
Holding events at your home, such as dinner parties or birthdays, doesn’t have to mean that you’re overworked during the preparation. Skip the hardship by exploring these simple, but tasty and beautiful, hors d’oeuvres. As a bonus, the ingredients are probably already in your fridge!
Let’s start with a smooth aperitif to set the tone. One of the easiest and most versatile cocktails to serve at any occasion is a gimlet. Being a two ingredient drink it’s the perfect option for a host low on time (or budget). All you need is your preferred gin and lime cordial, in equal measures! Serve to your guests in small glasses (so there’s plenty to go around) with a lime wedge as they await the array of plates that are to follow.
No party would be complete without delicious finger food – easy to snack on, but not too filling. What better way to execute this concept than preparing a traditional hummus plate?
This is where you get to brush up on your food styling skills. Place a bowl of hummus in the middle of a large plate first. Circle carrot and celery sticks around the outside of the bowl in alternate piles. Create cucumber scoops using thick slices and a melon-baller. Arrange these balls roughly, and in a circle around the celery and carrot sticks.
Lastly, fan thin pita bread triangles around the outside rim of the plate, and garnish with seasonal grape tomatoes. Don’t be afraid to add herbs to the hummus. Tuscan herbs pair amazingly with the dip.
Have a cupcake pan and some eggs? If so, then you have almost everything you need for little egg white muffins. Preheat the oven first and foremost as you don’t want to be rushing later! Whisk egg whites and add chopped spinach, tomatoes, and bell peppers to the mix. Spoon the mixture into the muffin tins and bake for 25 minutes. This recipe can be used in advance of the party date so you’re not listening out for an oven timer while entertaining your guests!
Once out of the oven, position your new creations in two rows on a long plate. Stick a couple of rosemary sprigs in the top of each one and casually sprinkle a few more around the edges of the plate. Voila! You now have a Pinterest-worthy appetiser to show off to your guests.
Veggie kebabs – a classic with little prep time. Entertaining guests will be a cinch with this idea. All you need are kebab sticks and fresh vegetables that you could already have in the fridge! With ingredients like bell peppers, cauliflower, carrots, tomatoes, broccoli, mushrooms, and pickled onions you’re already set.
Once you’ve filled the kebab sticks with your choice of vegetables, lie them on a square plate. If you have plenty, stack the extra on top to create tiers. These kebabs can be served raw, but if you have extra time on your hands sauté the vegetables and add your choice of herbs and spices to the mix for seasoning. Whether raw or sautéed, these kebabs go perfectly with a natural unsweetened yogurt and fresh herb dip.
Being a host on the go is never easy, especially when entertaining a large party of hungry people! Saving time where possible is key in these situations. With simple recipes like the ones above your party will be picture perfect, without the hassle.
