Fashion designer Leanne Marshall shares the importance of showcasing, not overshadowing, her brides. Along with some other-worldly dress inspiration!
While watching Leanne Marshall’s designs on the catwalk it’s easy to imagine them floating down wedding aisles across the globe. She describes her designs as other-worldly, and we couldn’t agree more. Leanne’s experience designing beautiful dresses, including custom made bridal gowns, culminated in a ready to wear Bridal Signature Collection released in 2011. We’re excited, you’re excited, Leanne’s excited. If you’re searching for the perfect wedding or event dress, here are a few things you should know.
Leanne describes her design aesthetic is “ethereal” and says that her dresses are designed for real, every day women. They’re designed “to flatter the woman’s body”, it’s about “seeing the woman in the dress and not seeing the dress before you see her”. When you’re trying on a wedding or event dress it’s important to imagine yourself in that dress during your occasion. If a dramatic collar limits your vision, or your fiancé will be distracted by your shoulder plumage during his vows, then you might prefer to try on a dress that lets you shine.
Leanne’s dresses are intentionally designed to complement the wearer. Stylists regularly visit her atelier to choose garments for celebrities, pulling dresses “for red carpet events, movies, and magazine editorials.” Leanne says that celebrities are attracted to her style because “it enhances their beautiful figures, and we do a lot of bright colours, and my dresses have movement in them. I choose a lot of light chiffons and material that when it catches the breeze it will fly and do magical things around her, and I think that’s what differentiates my clothing from what else is out there. It has a lot of appeal to celebrities because they know that’s a terrific photo opportunity.”
Her collection is stocked in boutiques across the globe, but brides can also visit Leanne’s atelier to try on samples. The dresses are made at the atelier by herself and her small team. “I still do all of the pattern making myself. I’m very particular about fit and I know exactly what I want.” This has been the case since twelve-year-old Leanne was designing her own dance costumes. Fast forward to 2008 when Leanne won season five of Project Runway with a “wave inspired collection in shades of turquoise, ivory, and sand”. Leanne Marshall collections have been “shown at New York Fashion Week and fashion weeks around the globe every year since 2008”.
