OL Congratulations on your very own wedding day! It looked like a truly magical celebration.

JLF “Thank you so much! Yes, I married my best friend and the love of my life in June surrounded by our immediate family and close friends. We had planned to elope but decided that it meant a lot to us to have our family present. Dear friends offered their gorgeous Santa Ynez Valley estate to us for the wedding. I wore a very romantic bohemian-chic gown and had my hair styled in a loose side-braid to match. The angel-wing necklace I wore down my back was made by a designer in Hawaii and was in memory of my mother who passed away a few years ago.

My mother’s ashes were in a beautiful vase set in the front row of the ceremony and my son carried our rings. My husband is originally from Istanbul, so we incorporated his culture with the Turkish rug we stood on to say our vows (which is now a prominent design piece in our home), and the talis that we wrapped with a cross, which my dad (who is also a Deacon) blessed for us just before we walked down the aisle together. We matched our paper goods with the rug print as a feature, along with our family emblem the fleur-de-lis. We served sparkling rosé at cocktail hour, and the chef of our favorite local restaurant prepared our family-style dinner. After dinner we had cake and Turkish delight with Turkish coffee. We treated our guests to Turkish hand-towel gifts as a thank you for being a part of our lives.

The great thing about planning this wedding was that I had the help of my sister. We do this for others all the time, but this time it was our own creation!”

OL Where do you love planning destination weddings and events?

JLF “In addition to my beautiful home in Santa Ynez Valley, and of course Santa Barbara, I have lived and worked on Maui for many years and my heart is always with the Hawaiian Islands. I also travel to Europe for weddings and events and am particularly in love with France, which is appropriate given my family name! Elopement planning now features on my list of services because it provides unique opportunities to focus on beautiful, intimate destinations around the world.”

OL What does it mean to be recognized by Martha Stewart as one of the top wedding planners in the world?

JLF “What an honor! Just to have my name used in the same sentence as hers is thrilling. I am lucky to live in one of the most beautiful wedding destinations in the world and to work alongside such talented vendors who all help make the work I do shine – it’s a collaborative effect.”

OL Could you share any particularly unique events you’ve planned?

JLF There have been “so many! I feel each is unique, in its own way. There have been celebrities, cat walks, Rose Bowl floats, yachts, horses, Persian dancers, fire dancers, hula dancers, bag pipes, private planes, you name it”!

OL What’s involved in planning someone’s celebration, as a planner?

JLF “As the planner you are involved in every aspect of planning and coordinating the day. It involves design, logistical planning, keeping everyone and everything on a timeline, serving as a liaison between the couple, their vendors, and their families, keeping everyone calm, and helping with the unique touches that make the day personal. Essentially, being an incredible multi-tasker able to handle a ton of things at once while putting out fires as needed, all while remaining graceful with a smile on your face!”

“I have tailored my business to be boutique and personal. I want each client to feel they are my only and that their wedding is the most important one that I have ever worked on. I also have a very calming personality and find that it tends to rub off on the couple, their families, and even the vendors I work with.”

OL So when should clients make contact with a planner in advance of a large event like a wedding?

JLF “Most couples begin planning their wedding about 9-12 months out from their wedding date. I always recommend determining generally when and where you plan to marry and then hiring a planner as soon as possible. We are there to help you find the perfect venue and vendors and offer suggestions to help with your budgeting and style. Having a planner at the beginning of your planning is the best way to ensure you are booking the best place and the best vendors for your special day!”

OL How can clients prepare for an initial concept meeting with you?

JLF “When I started my career, couples would come with wedding binders. Today, it’s all about the Pinterest board! I use” their visuals “as inspiration to come up with a completely new idea”. I prefer “custom designs that pull from things other than weddings”, like travel, restaurants, and art. Having “a location, guest count, and budget in mind is also helpful to get started. I ask my couples to prioritize” the elements of “their day so we can consider what is most important to them when budgeting and choosing vendors”. Understanding “their personal family history or relationship story is great too as that helps to personalize their day and make it uniquely theirs”.

OL What is it that you love most about your career and what path did you take to get here?

JLF “In addition to my love of design I truly love that I get to be a part of one of the most special days in a client’s life. To have a job that has meaning and makes a difference in someone’s life is all I could ask for. The fact that I get to travel to beautiful destinations and work with some incredibly creative and talented people doesn’t hurt either!"

"I am the product of my upbringing. My mother was an incredible designer who carried herself gracefully and saw the beauty in everyone and everything. My father and stepmother are entertainers and threw the most wonderful parties with the most amazing food while I was growing up. It’s no wonder my sister and I ended up doing what we do for a living. During college I studied Interior Design but also took a job at the Four Seasons Hotel in Chicago. It was the best thing that could have happened as I learnt to provide the highest level of service to my clients and expect nothing but the best from products and services overall.”
