Inger and Alex Opie celebrated love with family and friends in the heart of New Zealand.
After 12 years together Inger and Alex decided to celebrate their love and commitment with their family and friends. They set out to host an event that would both reflect them as a couple and be wildly fun for their loved ones. We’re so excited to share what they created!
The relaxed, rural setting of Inger’s parent's home made sense for family oriented Inger and country boy Alex. It was also the perfect follow up to Alex’s dream-worthy clifftop proposal. For this modern couple a wedding day was all about celebrating their relationship, past and future, with their favourite people.
Bride’s Advice: “Take time for you on the day. Before the celebrations begin go for a walk, do yoga, or hide in the bathroom! Whatever you need to do to collect your thoughts and calm your nerves so that you can be present and enjoy your day.”
Bride’s Advice: “Make sure you’re happy with your hair and makeup. Don’t feel like you have to stick with the first one you trial. If you’re uncertain explore other options. I changed my hair and makeup when I found an artist who I instantly had a good rapport with and felt beautiful on the day as a result.”
Despite torrential rain threatening to dampen spirits Inger and Alex wouldn’t change a thing. Calico topped hay bales quickly changed from marquee décor to ceremony seating. The bride walked down an aisle of petals through family and friends toward a beautiful dance floor ceremony. It didn’t happen in an olive grove as planned, but after a few giggles and plenty of joyful tears they were happily married.
Bride’s Advice: “If you’re planning an alfresco wedding don’t forget to plan a back-up venue in case the weather doesn’t play fair. Having a plan B means you can relax on your wedding morning.”
Inger and Alex designed their DIY wedding themselves. Then (with seemingly endless energy and determination) they managed the execution. From dance floor construction to place setting ribbon tying, they had it under control. In the days before the wedding their loved ones gathered to lend a hand. Family and friends raised a clear sided marquee and helped create the DIY table décor Inger had imagined. Inger’s talented mother Hilary baked and decorated a beautiful wedding cake as well as hand-made each dessert for the big day. Wedding guests were spoilt with her home-made ice cream using fruit grown on the property, coffee bark, macarons, rose jellies, panforte, pickled feijoas, pickled cherries, chutneys, apple butter, and elderflower cordial.
Bride’s Advice: “If you’re inexperienced at event planning ask an organised friend or a professional for help. Focus on what you’re good at and let them guide you on the rest. It’ll save you a lot of stress.”
The graphic designer bride took care of the finer details with a gorgeous collection of wedding stationery. Inger set the style with their invitations then continued it across the menus, place cards, a seating plan, signage, table numbers, and thank you notes. Finishing décor like miniature easels, rustic linen table runners, and vintage etched wine glasses left guests in no doubt as to who’s celebration they were attending.
If you’re on the fence about planning a DIY wedding, Inger and Alex swear that creating a beautiful event that was a true reflection of their relationship made all the planning, sweat, and tears well worth it.
